THE BITTER BUFFALO TIE-DYE PROCESS
Each piece is dyed by hand in Breckenridge, Colorado. The process is slow, physical, and one of a kind. This page explains how the work is made. It is not a shop.
Ice dye
Cloth is washed, tied, and prepared so fiber-reactive dye can bond with the cotton. Ice is laid over the tied fabric. As the ice melts, dye travels through the folds and splits into layered color that cannot be repeated exactly.
Hot-water irrigation
Some pieces use hot-water irrigation to move dye through the cloth with more control. Heat and water carry color into the folds, then the work is rinsed, washed, and finished by hand.
Every finished piece is handmade and one of a kind. No two folds, ice melts, or color paths are the same.
